Cati Jean "Classical Barre Au Sol #1" - Ballet Online Dance Class/Choreography Tutorial

This floor barre is a thorough mind and body conditioning based on the principle of classical ballet. Its focus is on maintaining proper alignment while strengthening the feet, ankles legs, back and core muscles while working on flexibility and turn out. This class also focuses on the constant awareness of breathing, which helps the dancer to achieve detail work and prevent injuries.

Notes
  • Warm-up / Alignment & external rotation: Sitting straight, this first exercise is a mind and body approach and allows the dancers to assess their alignment while feeling the connection with the breath. Working on isolations of the neck and spine; we slowly stretch and warm up the feet and ankle articulations in addition to parallel, internal and external rotation through the hips. This exercise will be repeated sitting up and on our stomach toward the ground.
  • Retirés: This exercise concentrate on the rotation of the leg in the hip socket, moving from a parallel to an external rotation. We are engaging both legs while focusing on maintaining a long back, stability in the hips and holding the core. This exercise is done while sitting, laying and facing the ground.
  • Dégagés: Series of dégagés while laying on the floor facing up and down, using core, glutes, external rotation while maintaining a strong center and long spine.
  • Petits and grand ronds de jambe while laying back, facing up: A strong focus on the hip and knee joints while keeping core engaged and stability in the pelvic structure. This exercise will be executed with the supporting leg en attitude to have the dancer concentrating on the moving/gesture/working leg.
  • Développés, enveloppés and ronds de jambe facing down: While executing this exercise, we will make sure to keep the centerline / torso and back engaged and the supporting leg on external rotation the whole time.
  • Grands battements devant, à la seconde, and en arabesque: Laying down, facing up and down. This exercise will be executed with the supporting leg en attitude while facing up in order to have the dancer concentrating on the grands battements part. An extra focus on the core is favored. Facing down, the supporting leg may be placed en flex to allow the dancer to maintain the external rotation
  • Warm down and end of class: As we get up, we get new sensations. Focusing the breathing through the sole of the feet and letting the oxygen nourish the entire body, resetting the nervous system by walking slowly and getting a new perspective on our alignment and overall energy.
