A beginner ballet class, with barre work only, for students with established basic knowledge of ballet steps and terminology.
Notes
- Before starting any exercise, go through a mental checklist for your posture: hip rotation, neutral pelvis, lifted stomach, wide back, relaxed shoulders, and engaged latissimus dorsi muscles.
- Pliés: start by focusing on one thing at a time. First the legs (turnout, alignment when bending, lifting arches), then the arm (shoulder in place, path of the arm, keeping fingers shaped), then you can add both elements together.
- Tendus in 1st: when pointing the foot from the flex position, articulate the movement, not just through demi-pointe but even through each toe.
- Tendus in 5th: after the first tendu hold the plié, and stretch both legs at the same for the 2nd tendu.
- Dégagés: keep the same height for the battement dégagés and the dégagés en cloche.
- Fondus: grow taller whenever you close 5th. Make sure the path of your foot is curved in the rond de jambe en l'air, not straight in and out.
- Adage: make a point of raising and lowering your foot against the supporting leg in the retiré.
